O'Hare Traffic Troubles - ABC7 Chicago

Ravi Baichwal co-anchors ABC7 Chicago's top-rated weekday afternoon and evening newscasts at 5 and 6 p.m. He is also a senior member of ABC7 Eyewitness News' team of reporters, covering the big stories throughout the Chicago area. Baichwal joined ABC7 Chicago in November 2006. In 2008 he won the Emmy award for best anchor in the Chicago/Midwest region of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Since then, he has won numerous awards for his reportage, most recently being nominated for regional Emmys on his coverage of the mass shooting in Highland Park.Prior to arriving in Chicago, Baichwal was an integral part of CTV News, Canada's No. 1 news organization. He hosted "CTV Newsnet Morning with Ravi Baichwal" and reported for CTV National News. He also anchored and hosted marquee network shows, including Canada's No. 1 newscast, "CTV National News."During his tenure, Baichwal gained a national reputation for seamless coverage of live, breaking news. He covered the fast changing world of politics and served as host of two award-winning election night specials. So, what is that charge for?ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watchPeoples Gas alerted customers of this new $5.27 monthly charge in a "bill message" when statements were sent out, but the I-Team is getting calls from people asking what's going on. ABC7 found that the fee is to help those in desperate need, but some customers are asking why they are now paying more.Richard Sandoval and his wife, Diana, say inflation and rising energy costs are making the bills harder to pay. So, when he spotted this charge on his bill, he called the I-Team."My recent bill from Peoples Gas that I got, I noticed there was a low-income discount adjustment added on to my bill," Sandoval said.That "low-income discount adjustment" charge goes to help fund a program which helps natural gas customers whose incomes are at or below 300% of the federal poverty level. Those who qualify could get a 5% to 83% monthly bill credit. Sandoval says he understands that people need help but wonders why consumers like him are paying more for the program."You have no option. If you pay your bill, you have to pay this $5 that they're putting on your bill. You can't get out of it or anything like that. So, I don't think it's fair to the customer," Sandoval said.The low-income discount rate program was created recently by the Illinois Commerce Commission in response to the Illinois Public Utilities Act. The state legislation helped fuel the new plan to get consumers assistance on rising energy bills. Supervising Attorney Dan Schneider of Legal Action Chicago helped the ICC design it."We're talking about chipping in $5 to protect hundreds of thousands of our neighbors from not being able to heat their homes, not being able to cook food for their children. And we're talking about doing it forever for everyone. It is a price to pay, but I absolutely, absolutely think it's a price worth paying," Schneider said."But some people say they didn't have a choice whether to pay that price," ABC7 Consumer Investigator Jason Knowles pointed out."Well, everyone absolutely has a choice," Schneider responded.Schneider says that "choice" is in the voting booth. RobbinsStar has worked for ABC7 Los Angeles and other media platforms, most recently for KIAH in Houston, TX, on the “No Wait Weather + Traffic” morning show and co-hosting “Houston Happens.”Her on-set debut was during Winter Storm 2021 in Texas, covering record weather for Houston and impacted areas. Given that the administration of Mayor Brandon Johnson is hunting for new revenue anywhere and everywhere and that New York began congestion pricing on Sunday, we weren’t surprised when Chicago Ald. Andre Vasquez said on X: “Congestion pricing makes sense as it helps lead to less congestion on streets, and if we model it in a way that is funded by those who come into the city, it helps fund road maintenance and safety.” Ald. Vasquez forgets that Chicago isn’t New York, and neither is our traffic, which is most problematic on the expressways and main arteries, not in a South Loop business district, which was almost devoid of traffic, human or vehicular, during the first part of rush hour on Monday morning. Scarily so. We’ve warned against congestion pricing in the past and hope it stays dead. Still, with a budget deficit looming next year and a mayor whose preferred mode of dealing with unpleasant fiscal realities is to hike taxes, revenue grabs like congestion pricing are always on the table.We’d rather see attention paid to bringing Chicago-area commuters clean, efficient and safe public transit systems. Rain and snow will taper off from west to east by 9 a.m. Temperatures will stay in the 30s, but winds will gust upwards of 30 mph. That will keep wind chills in the 20s all day. Expect a mix of clouds and sun with a few afternoon and early evening snow flurries or snow squalls. With falling temperatures late, some roads may be slick, especially any water that refreezes overnight with lows in the teens to low 20s.Friday will be another cold day, but less windy. Highs will reach the mid to upper 30s. Warmth returns this weekend with highs in the upper 50s Saturday and upper 60s Sunday.There's no real sign of cold heading our way.
