You've booted an ISO of Bart "into my VM box", does that mean you've got an existing virtual machine which you've (somehow) configured to boot from the Bart ISO rather than from the system on it's hard drive? If so, if you're booting an existing computer (real or virtual) off of the Bart CD rather than it's disk-based operating system, then that's exactly what Bart PE was designed for. Once you've booted into Bart, you can use Bart to read the hard drive, run virus scans, backup to network drives, etc. quote:quote: Application plugins I've personally used are Ghost32 I am very interested in this? Version 8 and later of Ghost Enterprise has a utility ("Ghost32") which runs under XP and can be used to make a Ghost image of a drive or partition. If you get this onto your Bart PE CD, you can map a network drive in Bart and then use Ghost32 to image disks or partitions on the system to a disk space somewhere on the network. Very handy for environments where you don't have the full-blown Ghost installed. Application plugins I've personally used are Ghost32 (requires access to Ghost enterprise), Firefox, Filezilla, Nero, Putty, VNC, Restoration, McAfee stinger, AdAware, GetDataBack, Foundstone, etc. You can author your own Bart PE install files for any of these as well as any app bootable within the basic XP environment of Bart PE, but in all cases I've personally used the plugin files made by others. dim Ars Praefectus Add bookmark #6 quote:BartPE is meant for troubleshooting, more than anything. With the right plug-ins, you can get pretty CLOSE to having "Windows on a CD", but it's kind of pointless.BartPE is meant for troubleshooting, more than anything. You can use it to boot a machine that has a screwed-up/virus infected/spyware-laden Windows install and fix stuff. It *is* tempting to go nuts with all the plug-ins and have CD-burners and browsers and all kinds of shit on your BartPE CD, but you'll never use that stuff. So, basically, you've seen all there is to see. Add bookmark #5 quote:I am very interested in learning how to build a custom XP image using BartPE. I hear there are people that put it on a USB drive and boot off of a USB drive and then I guess that calls the server to download the image? Actually the entire bootable image was on the USB drive. However, Bart himself has stated that certain limitations make the whole USB drive approach too flaky to rely on. The Bart PE users I'm aware of use Bart PE CD's.Customization involves first getting a bootable burn using the default Bart PE download. Assuming you've got that working, then customization amounts to adding the additional plugins you want. First stop would be plugins for newer hardware (NIC's & disk
2025-04-14Taken from WikipediaBartPE (aka Bart's Preinstalled Environment) was a lightweight variant of the 32-bit version of Microsoft Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, similar to Windows Preinstallation Environment, which could be run from a Live CD or Live USB drive. The BartPE system image is created using PE Builder, a freeware program created by Bart Lagerweij. It requires a legal copy of Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. Additional applications can be included in the image using plugins. As it often resides on a Live CD or USB drive, BartPE allows a user to boot Windows, even if a hardware or software fault has disabled the installed operating system(s) on the internal hard drive – for instance, to recover files. It can also be used to scan for and remove rootkits, viruses and spyware (that have infected boot files), or to reset a lost administrator password.PE Builder[]PE Builder (also known as Bart PE Builder) is the software used to create the BartPE system images.Description[]As with Windows Preinstallation Environment, BartPE operates by loading system registry files into RAM, and not writing any registry changes back to boot media. Thus, both operating systems require no hard drive or network access. This also allows them to be run from non-writable media such as a CD-ROM.Since each instance of BartPE is a new installation, the BartPE "boot" disk needs original Windows setup files in order to operate. The Bart PE Builder application interprets and condenses files from a Windows setup CD to create the BartPE installation. It can build from a Windows XP Pro or Home Edition CD, or from a preinstalled Windows XP version (without a CD).Additional applications can be included in the BartPE setup through the use of "plugins". A plugin contains setup information for a specific application, so that it can be included on the media and installed along with Windows at each BartPE boot. Currently there are a few hundred plugins available in addition to the dozen-odd that are included by default with BartPE. Since BartPE represents a totally independent operating environment, the most obvious application examples involve backup, restoration, diagnosis and error-correction of systems with malfunctioning primary storage drives. Plugin programs can nominally be added to the capacity of the BartPE media.BartPE is known to have certain incompatibilities with the Windows XP CDs shipped with most Dell PCs. The Dell versions include changes to the Windows setup files that can cause the BartPE build process to fail. 2 patches are currently available to correct the known problems, one to replace SETUPREG.HIV and the other to load a standard iastor.sys.See also[]Windows PE, the official Microsoft Windows Preinstallation EnvironmentWinBuilder, a free application designed to build and customize live CDs based on Windows PEWindows To GoList of live CDsExternal Links[]BartPE official homepage - Site no longer active in Feb 2017
