Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is one of the biggest games of the year, with its divisive open world and puzzling final hour dominating questions for weeks. Coming on the heels of the hit Final Fantasy 7 Remake, it’s natural to assume that Rebirth would be an easy win for Square Enix. But according to one analyst, its sales may not have stacked up, and that has me both worried and hopeful about the publisher’s recent shift in strategy.Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth only sold around half of what Remake did shortly after release, according to Daniel Ahmad, director of research and insights at Niko Partners. “It's selling about half of what Remake sold in the same timeframe and looks like it'll have a weaker tail (prior to any PS+-like release),” Ahmad said on social media.Analyst Daniel Ahmad says Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth sales are lagging far behind Remake.Data from Ampere Analysis show that Rebirth peaked at 2.2 million daily active users between its launch and April 10. While that data doesn’t represent every sale, it does suggest that the game’s sales were behind the 3.5 million copies that Square Enix reported Final Fantasy 7 Remake sold just in its first three days.It was always safe to assume that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth would sell fewer copies than Remake. The sequel’s story would be tough to follow for anyone who never played the first part, and naturally some players who didn’t care for Remake would drop off for the next game. But if its sales are actually only half of Remake, that could spell trouble for its publisher.Earlier this year, Square Enix confirmed a shift in its strategy that could result in it publishing fewer games.“We want to concentrate our development resources on carefully selected new titles that we will develop to a high level of quality,” Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu said in a financial report. To achieve that, Square Enix could be moving away from mid-budget titles like Harvestella and Valkyrie Elysium, which were released in recent years to relatively little fanfare.Relying too heavily on Final Fantasy may. 2025-04-08One may already be in development at Square Enix. Considering the company's apparent disappointment in the sales of FF7 Rebirth, it might be the only other entry that gets a chance to have a huge budget thrown at a remake. I'm sure the community could quickly divide into battle lines over which game most deserves a new treatment, but I'd be happiest to see FF9 get one. Related Red Dead Redemption, Final Fantasy 9 Remake & More Seemingly Revealed In Huge Game Leak A recent leak seemingly confirms that a Final Fantasy 9 Remake is happening and that Red Dead Redemption may finally come to PC in the near future. My hunger for an FF9 remake feels like a weird position to be in, because usually I'm the one advocating playing the original versions of games. It's so easy to lose what makes something special when modernizing it, and I often find complaints about quality-of-life and jank overstated. FF9 is my exception, though, and every passing year without official news of a remake only makes me realize more clearly how much I want one. I'll happily play Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 when it comes out, but I already know what I would trade it for in a heartbeat. 2025-04-09Summary Final Fantasy 9 remake rumors have been gaining traction, potentially balancing recent action-oriented combat trends. A turn-based combat system in the remake could appease long-time fans, while potentially offering a choice between action and traditional combat. Final Fantasy 9 remake could learn from the success of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy while staying true to its roots. As rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake continue to circulate, the dream that it could actually happen is becoming increasingly tangible. There have been a host of Final Fantasy remakes on fans' wish lists for quite some time, with Final Fantasy 9 leaning more toward one of the top choices on average, and it's entirely possible Square Enix has taken note of this and proceeded with its development. After seeing what the veteran developer has done with Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, it seems the sky could very well be the limit for a Final Fantasy 9 remake. Despite the limitless opportunities Square Enix could explore in improving Final Fantasy 9 for a remake, it might be better off reining things in when it comes to one area. Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth are two of the most recent Final Fantasy titles to shake up the franchise's combat, although the two of them still approach combat differently. Final Fantasy 16's approach was much more divisive than Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's, as the latter builds upon franchise tradition while the former all but ignores it. As such, a Final Fantasy 9 remake could balance out this pattern of repeated misdemeanors by firmly acknowledging the franchise's roots and reviving its traditional combat style. Related Final Fantasy 9 Remake Seems More Likely Than Ever, But One Game Can’t Be Forgotten There have been strong rumors about a remake of the ninth mainline Final Fantasy title, but that would mean skipping one key game. A Final Fantasy 9 Remake Could Atone for the Combat Sins of FF16 and FF7 Rebirth Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Both Feature Action-Oriented Combat Final Fantasy 16 has been a divisive Final Fantasy installment for many reasons, with its mature narrative and presentation being one of the most prominent. However, what has arguably inspired the most heated debates is the game's combat system, as it forsook the franchise's traditional turn-based combat for fast-paced action combat. While some fans have

We know it's coming, just want to have it on my preferred platform in more places. #352 I wonder what SE does now.A remake of FF7 always seemed like the emergency game for free money, but even making it and them getting great reviews still no one is buying it like previous entries. At this point what can they produce that can sell in expectations. I've said it in other threads but I think, sales-wise, the iron was hottest for a FFVII Remake in the PS3 era.
