Simple Bias Current Checker: Basically the way this thing works is that pins 1,2,3,4,5 and 7 pass uninterrupted through the device from tube base to tube socket. Pin 6 is not used and so there is no need to wire it up. Pin 8 from the tube base is sent out to a Multimeter set to dc milliamps and sent back to pin 8 of the tube socket. You are basically reading the current flowing through pin 8 by putting your meter in line with it. You can see the current flow in the diagram above. The current flows up from pin 8 of the tube base, out through the multi meter and then from the multi meter to pin 8 of the tube socket. The meter is set to DC milliamps and the range is set to under 200 ma on the meter. How to build the Bias Current Checker: Sand out the inside of the tube base if necessary so that the tube socket will fit down into the tube base. Do not try to force the tube socket into the base, the base is Bakelite and will crack. Trim the tube socket pins to about half their length so the pins do not hit the bottom of the tube base. Solder a 2 inch or longer bare wire to pins 1 through 7 on the tube socket. A small hole has to be drilled in the side of the tube base down near where pin 8 meets the base. You need a two conductor wire to exit out that hole and go to a double banana plug. I use the mini shielded cable for the wire. Solder the two conductors of the cable, one to pin 8 on the tube base and one to pin 8 on the tube socket. Push the whole contraption together so that wires soldered to pins 1 through 7 on the tube socket come out the bottom of pins 1 through 7 on the tube base. (They are hollow) Solder pins 1 through 7 at the tips of the tube base pins. Solder a double banana plug to the other end of the two conductor cable. I poured epoxy down inside the sockets to make them solid on mine, but this in not necessary. You do not want to get epoxy inside the area where the tube plugs in or your socket will be ruined. In terms of mechanics and size, the two scopes were very similar, and the both had the same focal length and magnification suite with my eyepieces. I found that the TeleVue-76 provided significantly better high magnification views of planets.I could have been happy with the TeleVue-76. It really was the perfect small APO, yet I often thought about the TeleVue-85 that I had first looked through. I reasoned that I should get the TeleVue-85 because it had a larger aperture, yet its physical dimensions were not significantly greater than the TeleVue-76. I also thought that the longer tube of the TeleVue-85 would make it easier to balance with a binoviewer. I took the plunge and finally got a TeleVue-85, the APO refractor that I really needed. One Classy ScopeI have always been struck by the quality and appearance of TeleVue telescopes. From the aluminum mag wheel focusing knobs to the captive, anodized aluminum dewshield, the TeleVue-85 is classy scope. My particular instrument features an ivory tube and satin black anodized aluminum fixtures. It features the old-style tapered focuser equipped with brass a compression-ring fixture.The scope is a bit larger than the TeleVue-76, but not enough to matter. It is very convenient to setup and use. The scope was designed to pack the maximum oomph in a small package. The tube is the same 3-inch stock as the Pronto and TeleVue-76, and it uses the same tube ring. This is a good design because it reduces the overall weight of the scope. To protect my enviroment, I use plenty of lead. So if you handle with xrays be careful and protect everyone...Some interesting links: 1: High Voltage Power SupplyTo produce xrays using a simple vacuum rectifier tube you'll need a high voltage power supply. I use the popular ZVS-circuit, an AC-flyback transformer and a cascade, to increase the Output-voltage up to 50-60 kV. For the cascade I took 10nF/20kV capacitors and 20kV/5mA diodes. You'll also need a powerful transformer (f.e. a 12V/250VA like mine).Step 2: The Xray TubeYou can use several vacuum tubes for producing xrays. In my case I use 2x2a recitier. Of cource you can take real xray tubes f.e. from a dentist too. They are offered on ebay for less than 80 USD.Step 3: The HousingTo protect everyone from the xrays you have to put the vacuum tube in a safe housing. My housing is made of Wood with 3 layers of lead at the outside. Only through a small window covered with thin aluminum foil the xrays can go out.Step 4: The Photographic Xray FilmTo see the xrays you'll need a xray box. Inside there is a xray sensitive foil, which converts the xrays into visible light (f.e. green light). This foil is placed behind the object you want to shine through.Step 5: The Whole Setup and the First TestAs you can see in the circuit, the xray tube is connected to the high voltage. To Limit the current, there should be a 2.2 MOhm resistor (10 W/40kV-type). The Output voltage is being measured with an ammeter and a 1 GOhm resistor. Therefore 1 µA corresponds to 1 kV. The current through the vacuum tube can be read from a 5mA ammeter.To get the pictures a camera is located behind the xray-foil. I use the 10s-self-timer and 30" exposure. In the mean time I run out of the room and switch on the power with my remote control.
