From “‘Life was like a box of chocolates…” to “You’re a toy,” Tom Hanks has had several quotable characters throughout his movie career. This is why fans were shocked to hear the 66-year-old household name tell People on Tuesday that only a select few movies he’s been in are “pretty good.”“No one knows how a movie is made – though everyone thinks they do,” he said while promoting his debut novel, “The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece,” which is set for release in May 2023.“I’ve made a ton of movies, and four of them are pretty good, I think, and I’m still amazed at how films come together. From a flicker of an idea to the flickering image onscreen, the whole process is a miracle,” he added.Tom Hanks attends the “Pinocchio” world premiere at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California on Sept. 7. Because tmux is running inside of your existing terminal. That means all youhave to do is find a good light weight terminal for your OS and all of your tmuxkeybindings and terminal usage patterns will work the same everywhere.I definitelydidn’t optimizefor that result, but it’s a pleasant side effect.#Exploring Light Weight WSL TerminalsSo now I have a new quest. Find a light weight terminal for WSL.WSLtty and WSL-Terminal (Nope)The first thing I did was Google for light weight WSL terminals and came acrossboth wsltty andWSL-Terminal.I tried both of them, but both of them ended up being pretty buggy.Subtle UI bugs, prompt flickering, medium amounts of type delay and other issueseventually lead me to write both of them off.Update: All of the wsltty problems are gone, and it’s what I currently use.I’ve done a video overview of it here.Default Ubuntu WSL Terminal (Yep!)So then I thought, ah what the heck. What if I just try using ubuntu.exewhich is the terminal that comes by default when you install Ubuntu WSL.And what do you know… it passed my initial tests. There’s no type delay at all and it’s amazing!Typing inside of this terminal feels faster than typing into notepad.exe orany other program I’ve run on Windows 10. I would go as far as saying it’s fasterand smoother than any device I’ve ever used. One of the core developersexplained why toowhen I asked. It immediately made me think back to my late 1990s and early 2000s gaming dayswhen I used to play competitive Quake.Back then I was using a 56k modem and had a 170-200ms ping. With such a highping time you had to predict how people would move because all of your weaponswould be delayed by 200ms.Then eventually I was able to get cable, and my ping time dropped to 30ms andeverything about the game changed. Everything felt instant and buttery smooth. It’s similar to how you might feel when upgrading from a 30hz LCD monitor to 120hz.There’s an amount of smoothness to it that’s hard to describe with words. It’slike everything goes from choppy and sluggish to feeling like you’re floatingon air. Sort of like playing air hockey with and without the air being turned on.And that’s exactly how it felt here. Typing feels so good in it that it gave megoosebumps, and the first thing I thought about when I woke up the next morningwas how excited I am to use this terminal. It really opened my eyes to how horrible most Electron based apps are for overallresponsiveness when typing. Although with that said, VSCode does a great jobwith type delay, despite it being an Electron app. It’s A LOT faster than Hyperand Terminus was.I guess the real thing to note here is that Microsoft is crushing it lately. What else is good about the Ubuntu WSL terminal?I’m glad you asked:It opens in less than 1 secondIt uses 15MB of RAM (compared to 300MB+ with Electron based terminals)It uses less than 1% CPU (even when typing)You’re using tmux, so you get:Tabs and split windows that open. So, you’ve got a Chromebook and you’re ready to give Linux Apps a try. Maybe you’re new to the world of Linux or perhaps you’d like to have the ability to install Linux Apps without using command line prompts in the terminal. Perhaps, like us, you like to do things just because you can.Whatever the reason, today we bring you good news and the steps to install a Linux Software Center on your Chromebook.First, what is a Linux Software Center? For experienced Linux users, installing applications comes as second nature and can be done by inputting a few, simple commands via the Linux terminal. When executed, these commands pull not only the desired application but also the package installer and dependencies needed to fully install the application. Recently, support for .deb file installation was also added to Chrome OS making it even easier to install Linux app by simply downloading Debian packages and double-clicking them as you would an executable file.Featured Videos If you’re a Linux newbie, all this may sound really daunting. Plus, where do these applications come from? How do you even know what commands to run in order to install them? What the heck is a terminal?A software center packages all of these commands in a nice, neat little apps store that fires all of these commands for you. Thankfully, you can now circumvent using command lines almost entirely by installing the Gnome Software Center right on your Chromebook. If you’ve made the move to the Beta Channel and installed Linux, here are a couple commands to get the Gnome Software Center up and running on your Chromebook.Start by launching the Terminal app from your app launcher. If you start typing “terminal” in the launcher search bar, you should see it pretty quickly.Once you have the terminal open, type or paste the following commands:sudo apt-get install gnome-software gnome-packagekitYou will then be prompted that you are about to install packages that will require additional space on your hard drive. Select “Y” to proceed and kick back for a couple of minutes while all the necessary files are downloaded and installed.Once the installation process is finished, you can close the terminal and you can find your new software center in the app launcher. You will see a couple of other new files in your launcher but don’t be concerned. These are just packages and installers required to run the software center. They

Chrome package is through the Terminal. In fact, you can even download the package from the terminal. So, instead of using a browser to download, then the file manager to locate the file and then yet another app to install it, you can do everything in one app. The Terminal is often the most convenient way of doing things on Linux. However, it’s not the most user-friendly way and many people find typing commands complicated. If you’re not scared of the Terminal, though, you can install Google Chrome on Ubuntu using Terminal. Ignore the several steps above, requiring several clicks, and just copy and paste the commands below. First, download Google Chrome using this command. wget you can install the downloaded package with this command.sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.debYou can also use the apt command to install, instead, if you prefer. sudo apt install ./google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.debRegardless, either command will require your password, and then you will have installed Google Chrome on Ubuntu using Terminal. If you’ve already downloaded the Google Chrome package file using a web browser, you can still install Google Chrome on Ubuntu using Terminal. Open the Terminal. On Ubuntu, you can press Ctrl + Alt + T to do so.Locate the downloaded Google Chrome package using the Files app.Type or copy and paste the following command in the Terminal, and press space instead of Enter. Drag and drop the Google Chrome package into the Terminal to add its location and file name. So, your complete command is going to look something like this: sudo dpkg -i '/home/username/Downloads/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb'Press Enter and enter your password when prompted. As you can see, the Terminal is quite flexible, and you can install apps using the Terminal at pretty much any stage of the whole process. For many Linux apps, you can even compile the app yourself using Terminal. Chrome is only available as an executable package, however. Disclosure: Mashtips is supported by its audience. If you ever spent time growing up watching spy thrillers, action flicks, or crime movies, you developed a clear picture in your mind of what a hacker's computer screen looked like. Rows upon rows of rapidly moving code, streams of grouped hexadecimal numbers flying past like raining code in The Matrix.Perhaps there's a world map with flashing points of light and a few rapidly updating charts thrown in there for good measure. And probably a 3D rotating geometric shape, because why not? If possible, this is all shown on a ridiculous number of monitors in an ergonomically uncomfortable configuration. I think Swordfish sported seven.Of course, those of us who pursued technical careers quickly realized that this was all utter nonsense. While many of us have dual monitors (or more), a dashboard of blinky, flashing data is usually pretty antithetical to focusing on work. Writing code, managing projects, and administering systems is not the same thing as day trading. Most of the situations we encounter require a great deal of thinking about the problem we're trying to solve, a good bit of communicating with stakeholders, some researching and organizing information, and very, very little rapid-fire typing. That doesn't mean that we sometimes don't feel like we want to be inside of one of those movies. Or maybe, we're just trying to look like we're "being productive."Side note: Of course I mean this article in jest. If you're actually being evaluated on how busy you look, whether that's at your desk or in meetings, you've got a huge cultural problem at your workplace that needs to be addressed. A culture of manufactured busyness is a toxic culture and one that's almost certainly helping neither the company nor its employees. That said, let's have some fun and fill our screens with some panels of good old-fashioned meaningless data and code snippets. (Well, the data might have some meaning, but not without context.) While there are plenty of fancy GUIs for this (consider checking out Hacker Typer or GEEKtyper.com for a web-based version), why not just use your standard Linux terminal? For a more old-school look, consider using Cool Retro Term, which is indeed what it sounds like: A cool retro terminal. I'll use Cool Retro Term for the screenshots below because it does indeed look 100% cooler.GenactThe first tool we'll look at is Genact.
