But, he said, with a little luck, some extra loans and perseverance the show would go on.“There was a mixup with the city,” Haire said. “When we finalized all the details with the city about the rental of the Civic Center, it was explained to us in writing that we had to pay a certain amount up-front and then we would have two weeks to pay the remaining amount due. But that was, apparently, a mistake, and now we have to pay the entire amount before the event, which makes it particularly hard for us.“A lot of people wait to purchase tickets, but I think with a few more loans we will make this thing into a full-blown successful event. We are expecting people from as far away as Indiana. So we are making an impact here in Albany by bringing visitors. ALBANY — Geeks, nerds and gamers far and wide will make a pilgrimage to Albany on Saturday for Epicon — Geek Convention Year Three at the Albany Civic Center, according to downtown business owner Tim Haire.Haire owns Xion: Paradise for Geeks at 212 W. Broad Ave., a hub for all things geek, gamer, anime or nerdcore. The store/hangout/hobby center is the go-to place for otakus (computer enthusiasts of particularly technical hobbies or anime) to get the latest videogames, popular trading cards and comic books, or to discuss the latest Pokemon raid on downtown.Haire has also been the primary organizer of Epicon for the last three years, although he takes little credit for the growing success of the “epic nerd-fest convention,” as he describes it.“This is really a community effort,” Haire said. “There are so many people behind the scenes that make this thing happen.”The event, which drew a crowd of more than 1,000 in its first year, has continued to grow and this year Haire said he expects the number of attendees to be as many as 3,000.“This year we are expecting anywhere between 1,000 to 3,000,” he said. “The first year we were expecting low, like maybe 400, but we were blown out of the water when we had 600 people in pre-sales and then 1,116 people show up for the actual event, not including kids, because we didn’t charge for 5 and under.”According to Haire, this year’s daylong event will feature a variety of activities, including assorted fandom ceremonies, authors, artists, cosplay actors and celebrities.“The event is Aug. 19 at the Albany Civic Center,” Haire said. “It begins at 10 a.m., although they have 11 a.m. on the sign. It is a full day of festivities, starting with opening ceremonies and going throughout the day with panels of special guests. We have independent authors, comic book artists, cosplay guests who go to all of these different shows. They are the best of the best at what they do. They literally become the character. If you want a living representation of a character, cosplayers are where you’re going to find that.”Haire explained that actors and celebrities would also be attending Saturday’s Epicon.“We have John Mark Loudermilk,” Haire said. “And our biggest headliner now is Steve Cardenas, who was ‘Rocky,’ the Red Ranger from the original ‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers’ back in the 1990s.”Haire would not go on record about
